The patented hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) based biocompatible hydrogel is based on di-hydroxyphenyl linkages of tyramine substituted hyaluronan. Corgel™ may be useful in surgical and transcatheter applications including vascular surgery, cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, aesthetics, ENT, drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Lifecore procured an exclusive license agreement with the Cleveland Clinic in 2007. Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists have performed preliminary animal studies in several applications supporting conceptual clinical applications.
Corgel is produced through a two-step process
- Tyramine (T) is substituted (S) onto the sodium hyaluronan (NaHy) using standard EDC protein chemistry creating TS-NaHy. The TS-NaHy is purified.
- Corgel hydrogel is formed from solutions of TS-NaHy with horseradish peroxidase when hydrogen peroxide is added.
The resulting Corgel varies from optically clear to slightly colored and has a wide range of physical properties depending on the selected TS-NaHy concentration. For example, hydrogels formed from TS-NaHy solutions of 6.25 - 100 mg/ml display a wide spectrum of physical properties that include those of a gel, a paste, or a fractile solid.

PDF OF CORGEL INSTRUCTIONS
- Corgel™ Kits are available with 1%, 3%, or 5% tyramine substitution.
- Depending on the targeted TS-NaHy concentration, Corgel™ Kits yield a total of between 5 and 50mls. Please see the Instructions for proper use.

Corgel™ is for RESEARCH USE ONLY - NOT FOR HUMAN USE.
Both the functional groups, and the resulting cross-linked structures, have unique photometric properties that allow for easy evaluation of the degree of substitution and cross-linking. Importantly, the degree of substitution required for using Corgel is very low (1% - 5%), maintaining the native HY structure.
A benefit of the Corgel technology is that this proprietary hydrogel can be formed under physiologic conditions. This allows for the direct inclusion of cells or bioactive agents prior to, during cross-linking, or alternatively, cross-linking directly adjacent to living tissue, maintaining cell and tissue viability.
Attached is a video showing Corgel's ability to occlude flow. This is just one potential example of Corgel's possible uses in transcatheter applications. The color of the gel in the video is not an actual representation of the gel in the kit. The gel in the video was colored for viewing purposes only.
Corgel Advantages
The potential advantages of our proprietary Corgel include the ability to:
- Fill or bulk up tissue
- Integrate with existing tissue matrices
- Incorporate into newly formed matrices
- Directly include cells and bioactive factors
- Maintain biocompatibility
- Control bioresorption
- Mimic the mechanical properties of normal tissues such as cartilage
- Cast easily into complicated anatomical shapes through a novel freeze/thaw technique
- Provide easy characterization, quality control and in vivo detection
